Annual Cub Camp, July 2010, Cranham Woods, Gloucestershire.

This year saw another of our successful joint camps between the Scouts and Cubs. The scouts camped on the main fields of the impressive Cranham site, whilst the Cubs were in the Pack Holiday Centre.

Why Cranham this year ? – three reasons really. We first camped there exactly 30 years ago in 1980, the warden is a good friend of ours and he retires at the end of the year . Most importantly, it’s one of Akela’s favourite sites and, as many of you know by now, he leaves us at the end of September after many, many years as Cub Scout Leader.

Cubs First Sleepover PDF Print E-mail

Here is an article by Rikki on the Cub Pack's first sleepover in the new HQ which was to all accounts a great success.

The Cubs first sleepover in the new HQ turned into a marathon weekend. Over the 20th and 21st March, 20 cubs and a hardy bunch of leaders met at 8am on Saturday just in time to tuck into a hearty breakfast.

Afterwards, we spent the day working towards the Scientist Badge with loads of experiments and merriment. Kim's cress growing seemed to turn into a paper aeroplane making session, whilst periscope making turned the HQ into a spy's paradise.

Dinner saw Chef turn back the clock as roast turkey with all the trimmings appeared. All that was missing were the crackers and a few carols. Nightime saw us all settling down to watch "Up" on DVD - a strange film, but enjoyed by all.

Sunday was the District Activity Day at Kibblestone, so up before dawn to another good breakfast before being packing into the cars and off to Stone. During the day, the cubs took part in activities ranging from backwoods cooking to archery - a great day helped by some kind weather.
We arrived back at HQ muddy, tired, but having had a great weekend.

Photos to appear soon.

Conservation Camp (Scouts) PDF Print E-mail

Last weekend (20th-22nd Nov) was the Scouts first ever (or at least as far back as I can remember!) Conservation Camp. The base for the weekend was our brand new Scout Hut!

The camp started on the Friday night with a 2ish hour hike/walk around Lichfield visiting several other Scout Huts. At each Hut the Scouts were rewarded with a different component for pizzas so the more Huts they visited the more pizza toppings they got! On returning to our Hut the Scouts made their pizzas and then it were time to settle down for the night.

Saturday saw us make a start the conservation work, which involved clearing a fairly large area of woodland of Rhododendrons so that new native trees can be planted, we also did crate stacking. After a nice chicken curry for tea and plenty of games it was time for a well earned sleep!

Sunday saw us finish off the conservation work and have an archery session and visit the tuck shop!

Thanks to all who turned up, it was a great weekend, even the weather couldn't dampen our spirits!

Photos will be in the gallery soon so watch this space!

First Meeting - Cubs PDF Print E-mail

First night nerves?

Then try holding a Cub pack Meeting for the first time in the new HQ. Can we remember which key opens the door, will we turn off the alarm without creating mayhem, where are the light switches?

Having overcome these issues and remembered to open the fire exits, then it's time for the cubs to arrive. Hang on, where's the table to take the subs ? Ah, still in the cardboard wrappings. Remove cardboard wrapping - anyone seen the bin to put the wrapping in ?. I could go on all night.
Suffice to say that once we got sorted, then the benefits of a nice warm room took over. After all the years of suffering cold and damp, this is heaven.

Fire briefing and pointing out where the toilets are all done, then it's time for a game outside. Chaos changing shoes with 32 kids, but well worth the effort to preserve the floor.

A good first night, crowned by holding three historic investitures, the first cubs to be invested in the new HQ, so a very special ocassion.

An exhausting night, but well worth it . Next few weeks should be easier as we become more familiar with all the new gear and, at last, have somewhere to store the equipment rather than lugging it about every week.

Oh, and I think we even managed to set the alarms right at the end.

Thanks

Rikki

Water Camp 09 PDF Print E-mail

The 18th-20th of September saw the Scout Troop take to the high seas (well the River Trent!) for their first ever (or at least as far back as we can remember) Water Camp. The venue for this camp was Trent Lock, a purpose built Scout Activity Centre with no road access, so we had to get a boat over to the site, which was an exciting start to a fantastic weekend. After pitching our tents we settled down with some hot chocolate, plenty of biscuits and a tense game of Pictionary. We went to bed relatively early in anticipation of the activities the following morning. We arose to a perfect morning and after breakfast took to the water in Canadian canoes which was great fun! A short drinks break later saw us back on the water in kayaks which resulted in everyone getting very wet after doing a wonderful rendition of "Heads, shoulders, knees and JUMP!" After lunch we picked our preferred craft, either a Canadian canoe or a kayak for an afternoon trip down the river. We all "shot a weir" (I think was the technical term) which was amazing! 3 hours later we returned to the site for a filling pasta bolognaise followed by..... chocolate gateaux!! A couple of wide games and hot chocolate later brought Saturday to a close. Sunday morning saw the great raft race, with 2 teams building and taking to the water in surprisingly stable rafts, neither of which fell apart and sank (much to our disappointment!) Any rumors of leaders chucking buckets of water over any of the Scouts are of course true! All too soon it was time to pack away, all aboard the boat back to "the other side". A fantastic weekend, we will most definitely be back....

Thanks to all the staff at Trent Lock for making the weekend extra special. Pictures are now in the gallery! Any questions/problems just ask! - click the contact us tab to the left.

Just to keep you all updated, the first meeting for the New Headquarters will take place tomorrow (Thursday 10th September) where the beavers will meet at 5pm!

The inside is all virtually finished with only a couple of minor parts left to be completed tomorrow. The landscaping also needs to be completed and underground storage to be completed within the coming weeks.

I will write a report tomorrow to explain how it went.

James
